NDC ZONES 2027 PRESIDENTIAL TICKET TO SOUTH FOR SINGLE FOUR-YEAR TERM
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, a move that could reshape the political landscape ahead of the next general election.
The decision was reached during the maiden National Convention of the party held in Abuja on Saturday, where delegates overwhelmingly adopted the motion as part of the party’s zoning arrangement for the 2027 presidential election.
The motion was moved by Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly.
Delegates at the convention also resolved that after the completion of the single four-year term by a southern president, the party’s presidential ticket would automatically return to Northern Nigeria.
The development is widely seen as opening the door for southern political figures interested in contesting under the platform of the NDC, including former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, alongside other potential aspirants from the region.
Party leaders at the convention described the zoning arrangement as part of efforts to promote fairness, inclusion, and national balance within the party’s internal structure.
Political observers say the decision may influence alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, especially as major political parties continue consultations on power rotation and regional representation.
More details from the convention are expected to emerge in the coming hours as party officials conclude deliberations.
