STUDENTS SHOULDN’T RISK THEIR LIVES TO ACCESS EDUCATION — FEDPOLEL SU PRESIDENT RAISES ALARM OVER TRANSPORT CHALLENGES

The President of the Student Union Government (SUG) of the Federal Polytechnic, Ile-Oluji, Comrade James Oyewole, has expressed deep concern over the transportation difficulties facing students of the institution, describing the situation as a growing safety and welfare issue.

In a statement made available to the public, Oyewole said many students residing within the host community face serious hardship commuting to campus daily due to the absence of affordable and accessible transportation options.

According to him, the lack of reliable transport has forced many students to depend on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as “okada,” despite the associated safety risks and rising transportation costs.

“One of the biggest challenges currently facing students of our institution is transportation. Every day, students living within the host community struggle to get to campus due to the lack of accessible and affordable transportation,” he stated.

He noted that the few buses operating around the campus are beyond the financial reach of many students and mostly operate along express routes, leaving students living in interior parts of the town with limited mobility options.

Oyewole explained that the situation has continued to place financial pressure on students, while also contributing to lateness to lectures and increased stress levels among the student population.

The SUG President further stated that the burden could have been reduced if the institution or Student Union had access to functional “Aluta buses,” similar to those available in several tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

According to him, such buses would provide students with safer, cheaper, and more convenient transportation services within the campus environment.

Describing the appeal as more than a complaint, Oyewole called on stakeholders, alumni, political leaders, business owners, and members of the host community to support efforts aimed at improving student transportation.

“We humbly appeal to well-meaning individuals, stakeholders, alumni, political leaders, business owners, and members of the host community to support students by helping provide buses that can be managed by the Student Union Government for subsidized student transportation,” he said.

He also emphasized the historical role played by the Ile-Oluji community in the establishment and growth of the Polytechnic, urging residents and stakeholders to extend the same support toward improving students’ welfare and safety.

“It is important to remember that the host community played a major role in the establishment of the Polytechnic. The same spirit that fought for the growth of this institution can still be extended toward improving the welfare and safety of its students today,” Oyewole added.

The SUG President maintained that any investment toward the development of Federal Polytechnic Ile-Oluji would also contribute positively to the broader development of the Ile-Oluji community.
