VP SHETTIMA COMMISSIONS AKURE’S FIRST FLYOVER AS AIYEDATIWA NAMES PROJECT AFTER FASORANTI

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday commissioned the Onyearugbulem–Shagari/Irese Road Flyover and Junction Improvement Project in Akure, Ondo State, describing the project as a major infrastructure milestone expected to ease traffic congestion and support economic growth in the state.

The commissioning ceremony took place along the Ilesha–Akure–Owo Expressway, where the Vice President said the flyover would improve traffic circulation, enhance road safety, and create opportunities for increased industrial and commercial activities along the corridor.

Shettima commended the Ondo State Government for undertaking what he described as a strategic intervention at a critical transport route, noting that infrastructure development remains essential to regional integration and sustainable economic progress.

Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, who hosted the event, was joined by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, members of the state executive council, traditional rulers, security chiefs, and other dignitaries.

Speaking at the event, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the flyover as a historic achievement, noting that it is the first flyover bridge constructed in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

According to the governor, the project was designed to address years of severe traffic congestion, frequent road accidents, and delays experienced at the busy Onyearugbulem–Shagari and Akure–Benin Expressway intersection.

He explained that the junction had long served as a major gateway into the South-West region, where traffic gridlock often disrupted economic activities and caused avoidable loss of productive hours.

Governor Aiyedatiwa said the flyover project was initiated under the administration of the late former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and sustained by his administration to ensure its successful completion.

In recognition of the contributions of elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who turned 100 on Monday, the governor announced that the flyover would now be known as the Reuben Fasoranti Flyover.

The governor stated that his administration has intensified infrastructure development across the state within the last year, with a focus on improving transportation networks and boosting economic activities.

He listed some ongoing and completed road projects to include the dualisation of the Akure–Idanre Road, Akungba–Ikare Road, Okitipupa–Igbokoda Road, and College Road in Igbokoda.

Aiyedatiwa also highlighted the rehabilitation and asphalt overlay of more than 100 kilometres of roads across Ondo State’s three senatorial districts, including Akure–Ijare Road, Akure–Imafon Road, Aiyegunle–Oka Road, and Igbotako Road.

According to him, several of the projects have already been completed and commissioned, while others are nearing completion.

The governor described the Reuben Fasoranti Flyover as one of the flagship projects of his administration, adding that it has already improved traffic flow, reduced travel time, and enhanced safety for motorists and residents using the corridor.

He commended the contractors, engineers, consultants, and workers involved in the construction, noting that the project was delivered largely by indigenous professionals.

Governor Aiyedatiwa also appreciated residents of Akure for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction period, assuring that the infrastructure would serve the state for many years.
